What actually happens in a first session

Most people worry about the first session more than anything that comes after. Here’s the real order of things — so you know what you’re walking into.

You can pause or stop at any time.

  1. Before you sit down

It usually starts smaller than a full session

Many people begin with a free 15-minute call or a Vibe Check. That’s a chance to say what’s going on, ask about fit and language, and hear who might suit you. There’s no fee for that call, and no commitment to book.

  2. Walking in (or logging on)

In person at Sunway Geo, or online

You’ll meet a clinical psychologist, registered counsellor, art psychotherapist, or supervised trainee — whoever you chose, or who we matched you with. Online sessions use the same pace and care; only the room changes.

  3. The first 10 minutes

    Mostly settling, not digging

Your practitioner will explain confidentiality and its limits (including serious risk to your safety or someone else’s), how sessions usually run, and what you can expect from them. You decide how much to share on day one.

  4. The middle

What’s been hard — and what you’d like to be different

This isn’t an interrogation. It’s a conversation about what’s bringing you now, what you’ve already tried, and what “better” might look like for you. Couples and families get space for more than one voice.

  5. The end

A next step you both agree on

You’ll leave with a sense of whether this person feels workable, and what a next session might focus on — or with a clear redirect if Safe Space isn’t the right place. If the match doesn’t feel right after the first session, tell us and we’ll help you change.

What it is not

A few things the first session is not

  • Not a crisis service — if you need help now: Talian Kasih 15999, Befrienders KL 03-7627 2929, or 999.

  • Not a diagnosis factory — understanding comes before labels.

  • Not a commitment forever — you can pause or stop.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can contact us directly.

How do I know who to see?

Vibe Check or the free 15-minute call. We’ll suggest someone based on what’s going on, language, and timing. You can change if it doesn’t feel right.

Can sessions be online?

Yes. In person at Sunway Geo Avenue, or online — same pace either way.

Is it confidential?

Yes, within the legal and ethical limits explained in your first session.

What if I’m in crisis right now?

Safe Space is not a crisis service. Call Talian Kasih 15999, Befrienders KL 03-7627 2929, or 999.

A sentence is enough to begin

If you’re still deciding, start with a workshop or Vibe Check. If you’re ready to talk, request the free call.
